Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions answered regarding ranks, quota allocations, category conversions, and fee waivers.

01

What is the difference between CRL Rank and Category Rank?

CRL (Common Rank List) is your overall rank among all test takers in India. Category Rank is your specific rank within a reservation category (SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, or PwD). While JoSAA processes all seat allotments based on your Category Rank, cutoff closing ranks are published in CRL terms to maintain baseline comparability across columns.

02

What is the difference between Freeze, Float, and Slide options?

These options determine your seat status for subsequent rounds:

  • Freeze: You accept the allotted seat and opt out of further branch or college upgrades.
  • Float: You accept the current seat but remain open to upgrades in higher choice preferences across any institute.
  • Slide: You accept the seat and look for upgrades only within the same allotted college.

03

How is the Home State (HS) vs. Other State (OS) quota determined?

Your Home State quota is determined strictly by the state where you completed your Class 12th board examinations, regardless of your permanent residence, place of birth, or current address. If you completed Class 12th in Delhi, you qualify for the Delhi Home State quota for NIT Delhi and JAC Delhi colleges.

04

How does the Tuition Fee Waiver work in NITs and IITs?

For IITs, NITs, and IIEST:

  • SC, ST, and PwD students receive a 100% tuition fee waiver.
  • General/OBC/EWS candidates with annual family income under ₹1 Lakh receive a 100% tuition fee waiver.
  • General/OBC/EWS candidates with family income between ₹1 Lakh and ₹5 Lakhs receive a 2/3rd tuition fee waiver.

05

Is the seat acceptance fee refundable if I withdraw from JoSAA?

Yes, if you request seat withdrawal online before the final round of JoSAA seat allotment, the Seat Acceptance Fee is refunded to your bank account after deducting a processing charge (usually around ₹2,000 to ₹5,000). Refunds are not possible once the final seat allocation round commences.

06

What happens if I reject the allocated seat in Round 3?

If you withdraw from your seat before the withdrawal deadline, you forfeit that specific allotment and will not be considered for subsequent JoSAA rounds. However, you remain eligible to register separately for CSAB special rounds and state-level counselling boards.

07

Is CSAB counselling safe to opt for?

CSAB special rounds occur after JoSAA completes and allocates remaining vacancies. It is highly recommended if you do not get a seat in JoSAA or are willing to risk your current NIT allotment for a better seat, as cutoff ranks drop significantly.

08

What documents are mandatory during online document verification?

Mandatory documents include:

  • Class 10 Marksheet (as proof of age) & Class 12 Certificate.
  • JEE Main/Advanced Admit Card & official Scorecard.
  • Provisional Seat Allotment Letter & Seat Acceptance Fee payment receipt.
  • Category Certificate (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS if applicable) and Medical Certificate (signed by a registered medical practitioner).
