What is JoSAA Counselling 2027?

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is the apex governing body constituted by the Ministry of Education to conduct common, unified counselling for undergraduate engineering, architecture, and science admissions across India's top government-funded institutes. Prior to JoSAA's inception, IITs and NITs conducted isolated counselling systems that caused extensive seat blockages and vacancies.

Through JoSAA 2027, candidates who qualified in JEE Advanced 2027 are eligible for admission into 23 IITs, while candidates with valid ranks in JEE Main 2027 can compete for seats in 32 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 40 GFTIs. The entire process takes place online at josaa.nic.in.

JoSAA 2027 Eligibility Criteria

To register and claim a seat in JoSAA 2027, candidates must satisfy both entrance examination rank qualifications and board examination percentage criteria:

For Admission to IITs (23 Institutes)

  • Must have secured a valid Common Rank List (CRL) or Category Rank in JEE Advanced 2027.
  • Minimum 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) OR top 20 percentile in respective Class 12 board.
  • Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics must be compulsory subjects in Class 12.
  • Candidates who accepted an IIT seat previously in JoSAA are ineligible for IITs.

For NITs, IIITs & GFTIs (98 Institutes)

  • Must have secured a valid All India Rank (AIR) in JEE Main 2027 Paper 1 (B.Tech) or Paper 2A/2B (Arch/Plan).
  • Minimum 75% aggregate marks in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) OR top 20 percentile of qualifying board.
  • Candidates must satisfy State of Eligibility (Home State vs Other State quota).
  • Passed Class 12 in 2025, 2026, or appearing in 2027.

Top 20 Percentile Benefit: If your Class 12 board aggregate is below 75% but falls within the official top 20 percentile cutoff declared by your state or national board (e.g. CBSE, ISC, UP Board, Bihar Board), you remain 100% eligible for JoSAA admissions!

Step-by-Step JoSAA 2027 Counselling Process

The joint counselling workflow is structured across 6 transparent and sequential stages:

1

Online Registration

Login to josaa.nic.in using your JEE Main 2027 Application No. and Password. Verify personal data, gender, and category details.

2

Choice Filling

Select courses and colleges from the available list. Add as many choices as you like. Arrange choices in strictly decreasing order of preference.

3

Mock Allotment & Locking

Review Mock Allotment 1 & 2 results. Adjust priorities based on trends. Lock your choices with OTP authentication before the final timer ends.

4

Seat Allotment Result

JoSAA publishes round-wise allotment results based on merit (CRL/Category Rank), seat matrix, quotas (HS/OS), and preference order.

5

Choose Willingness & Pay SAF

Select Freeze, Float, or Slide. Pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) online: ₹35,000 for GEN/EWS/OBC, ₹17,500 for SC/ST/PwD.

6

Online Document Verification

Upload Class 10/12 marksheets, category certificate, state proof, and medical certificate. Promptly resolve queries raised by the verifying officer.

JoSAA Seat Willingness Options: Freeze vs Float vs Slide

When you are allotted a seat in any JoSAA round, you must indicate your willingness for subsequent rounds. Choosing the right option is critical to protecting your existing seat while keeping upgradation possibilities alive:

FREEZE

Confirm & Finalize Seat: You are fully satisfied with the currently allocated college and branch. You do not want to participate in any further rounds of seat allocation.

  • ✔ Allocated seat is permanently reserved.
  • ✔ Exits all further rounds of JoSAA.
  • ✔ Ready for final institute admission.

FLOAT

Upgrade to Any Higher Choice: You accept the allocated seat but wish to be considered for an upgrade to any higher-preferred academic program across ANY institute in upcoming rounds.

  • ✔ Retains current seat as a safety net.
  • ✔ Moves to higher preference if available.
  • ✔ Most popular choice among aspirants.

SLIDE

Upgrade in the Same College: You accept the allocated seat and wish to be upgraded to a higher-preferred branch only within the SAME institute in future rounds.

  • ✔ College remains locked (e.g. NIT Trichy).
  • ✔ Upgrades branch (e.g. Mech → CSE/ECE).
  • ✔ No risk of moving to another institute.

Golden Rule: If you are upgraded to a higher preference in a subsequent round (under Float or Slide), your previously allocated seat is automatically and permanently cancelled and given to another candidate. You cannot claim your old seat back!

JoSAA Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) & Refund Rules

Upon provisional allotment in any round (Round 1 to 5), candidates MUST pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) online via Net Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card, or UPI within the allotted reporting window. Failure to pay SAF leads to automatic cancellation of the seat and disqualification from subsequent rounds.

Candidate Category Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) JoSAA Processing Charge Fee Transferred to Admitted College
GEN, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL ₹35,000 ₹5,000 ₹30,000 adjusted into 1st semester tuition fee
SC, ST, PwD (All Categories) ₹17,500 ₹5,000 ₹12,500 adjusted into 1st semester tuition fee

Seat Withdrawal & Refund

Candidates can withdraw from JoSAA during Rounds 2 to 4 (or before the final round). A refund of SAF is issued after deducting ₹5,000 administrative processing charges.

Partial Admission Fee (PAF)

After Round 5, candidates retaining seats in the NIT+ system must pay Partial Admission Fee (PAF) (~₹40,000 for GEN/OBC, ₹20,000 for SC/ST) to confirm their seat.

Mandatory Documents for Online Verification

All documents must be scanned clearly in PDF/JPEG format and uploaded to the JoSAA candidate portal during online reporting:

Expert Choice Filling Strategy & Pro Tips

Choice filling is the most crucial part of JoSAA counselling. Since there is NO upper limit on the number of choices you can submit, follow these proven best practices:

1. The 3-Tier Model

Divide your choices into Dream Choices (top institutes with closing ranks higher than your rank), Realistic Choices (colleges matching your rank), and Safe Choices (backup institutes with closing ranks comfortably below your rank).

2. Ideal Preference Order

Never place a less-preferred institute higher on your list just because you have a higher rank. The allocation algorithm checks choices sequentially from #1 downwards and locks your best match.

3. Utilize Mock Results

Analyze Mock Allotment 1 & 2 seriously. If you did not receive a mock allotment, add more safe choices in mid-tier NITs/IIITs before the final choice locking timer expires.
