How NTA Calculates JEE Main Rank from Percentile
The National Testing Agency (NTA) calculates the Common Rank List (CRL) using the normalized NTA Score obtained across all shifts of Session 1 and Session 2. Because JEE Main is administered in multiple shifts with distinct question sets, raw marks are not directly used for ranking. Instead, percentiles measure the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or less than a candidate in that specific shift.
Official Percentile Formula:
NTA Percentile = (100 × Number of candidates who scored ≤ Raw Score in the session) / (Total candidates in that session)
All India CRL Rank Estimation Formula:
CRL Rank = [ (100 - NTA Percentile) / 100 ] × (Total Unique Appeared Candidates) + 1
Official JEE Main Marks vs Percentile vs CRL Rank Reference
The table below compiles official historical statistics across January and April sessions. Due to varying shift difficulty, raw marks correspond to a range of percentiles. The Common Rank List (CRL) is benchmarked against 14,15,000 unique candidates.

Official Category-wise JEE Advanced Qualifying Cutoff Trends
To qualify for JEE Advanced and register for IIT admissions, candidates must secure an NTA score at or above the category qualifying cutoff. Here is the official multi-year progression released by NTA:
| Category | 2024 Cutoff Score | 2023 Cutoff Score | 2022 Cutoff Score | Estimated 2026 Cutoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General / Unreserved | 93.2362 | 90.7788 | 88.4121 | 93.20 – 93.60 |
| GEN - EWS | 81.3266 | 75.6229 | 63.1114 | 81.00 – 82.50 |
| OBC - NCL | 79.2804 | 73.6114 | 67.0090 | 79.00 – 80.50 |
| Scheduled Caste (SC) | 60.0928 | 51.9776 | 43.0820 | 60.00 – 62.00 |
| Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 46.6975 | 37.2348 | 26.7771 | 46.00 – 48.00 |
| PwD Candidates | 0.0018 | 0.0013 | 0.0031 | 0.0015 – 0.0025 |
Cutoff Surge Note: The qualifying cutoff for the General category increased to 93.23 in 2024 primarily due to the historic high in total unique registrations (exceeding 14.15 Lakhs). Ensure your preparation targets at least 94+ percentile (around 125–130+ marks in moderate shifts) to comfortably qualify for JEE Advanced.

Official NTA Tie-Breaking Rules for Merit Ranking
When two or more candidates obtain the same total NTA Score in JEE Main (Paper 1), their inter-se merit is determined strictly according to the following order of priority:
- Higher NTA Score in Mathematics: Mathematics score takes precedence above all other subjects.
- Higher NTA Score in Physics: Evaluated if mathematics scores are identical.
- Higher NTA Score in Chemistry: Evaluated if physics scores are also identical.
- Lower ratio of negative responses to correct attempts: Candidate with fewer incorrect attempts across all subjects is given a higher rank.
- Lower ratio of incorrect answers in Mathematics, Physics, then Chemistry.
- Older Candidate in Age: If all academic criteria match, the candidate older in age is awarded the higher rank.
