JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria 2027 Overview
To qualify for admissions into the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), engineering aspirants must qualify in JEE Advanced 2027. However, candidate registration is restricted to only those who satisfy the five specific eligibility criteria laid down by the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
The initial and primary filter requires candidates to qualify through JEE Main 2027 (Paper 1) and rank within the top 2,50,000 scores across all categories. Furthermore, strict regulations on the number of attempts (maximum of two consecutive years) and previous admissions at any IIT are enforced.
Note on 12th Board Marks: Candidates must score at least 75% aggregate marks in Class XII (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or place within the top 20 percentile of their respective educational boards to secure admissions into IIT programs. The Five Core Eligibility Criteria
Criterion 1: Performance in JEE Main 2027
Candidates must have qualified the JEE Main 2027 (Paper 1) exam and be positioned among the top 2,50,000 candidates across the category-wise merit list. The category distribution guidelines are structured as follows:
- OPEN Category: Top 96,187 candidates (excluding PwD)
- OPEN-PwD Category: Top 5,063 candidates
- GEN-EWS Category: Top 23,750 candidates (excluding PwD)
- GEN-EWS-PwD Category: Top 1,250 candidates
- OBC-NCL Category: Top 64,125 candidates (excluding PwD)
- OBC-NCL-PwD Category: Top 3,375 candidates
- SC Category: Top 35,625 candidates (excluding PwD)
- SC-PwD Category: Top 1,875 candidates
- ST Category: Top 17,812 candidates (excluding PwD)
- ST-PwD Category: Top 938 candidates

Criterion 2: Number of Attempts
Candidates can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years. Candidates who have already written the exam twice in past sessions are disqualified.
Criterion 3: Age Limit Guidelines
Candidates born on or after October 1, 2002, meet the age requirement for JEE Advanced 2027. SC, ST, and PwD candidates receive a 5-year age relaxation, extending eligibility to those born on or after October 1, 1997.
Criterion 4: Appearance in Class 12 Boards
Candidates must have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) board exams for the first time in either 2026 or 2027 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory subjects. Those who appeared in 2025 or earlier are not eligible, except when their board's results were declared on or after September 21, 2025. Criterion 5: Prior Admission at IITs
Candidates who have already been admitted to any IIT (or ISM Dhanbad) in the past are disqualified. This includes candidates whose admission was cancelled after joining. However, candidates who withdrew or had their allocated seats cancelled before the final seat allotment round of JoSAA 2026 remain fully eligible to appear in 2027. Foreign Nationals & OCI/PIO Candidates
Foreign National candidates and Overseas Citizens of India / Persons of Indian Origin (OCI/PIO) who have completed their Class 12 studies abroad are not required to appear for JEE Main. They can directly register for the JEE Advanced 2027 exam if they meet the following tailored criteria:
- Age Limit: Must be born on or after October 1, 2000.
- Attempt Limit: Restricted to a maximum of two attempts in consecutive years.
- Academic Appearance: First-time Class 12 board appearance must be in 2026 or 2027.
- Prior Enrollment: Must not have taken admission at any IIT in the past.
