How NTA Calculates the Percentile Score — Official Methodology
The National Testing Agency (NTA) computes the NTA Score (Percentile) using a normalization process that accounts for varying difficulty across different exam shifts. Candidates from tougher shifts are not disadvantaged compared to those in easier ones.
Official NTA Percentile Formula:
NTA Percentile = [ 100 x (No. of candidates in session scoring ≤ Raw Score) ] ÷ (Total candidates in that session)
CRL Rank Estimation Formula:
CRL Rank ≈ [ (100 − NTA Percentile) ÷ 100 ] x 14,15,000 + 1
Important: The NTA Percentile is computed per shift within a session — not across all sessions together. The final All India CRL is compiled using the best percentile score from Session 1 and Session 2 for each candidate.
Official JEE Main 2026 Marks vs Percentile Reference Table
Compiled from official NTA JEE Main result data across January and April sessions (2022-2024). A range of percentiles is shown per marks bracket due to shift-to-shift difficulty variations. Rank benchmarked against 14,15,000 unique candidates.

Official JEE Advanced Qualifying Cutoff Percentile Trends (2022–2024)
To register for JEE Advanced and compete for IIT seats, candidates must score at or above the category-specific NTA percentile cutoff. Below are official multi-year qualifying cutoffs released by NTA, with 2026 projections.
| Category | 2024 Cutoff Percentile | 2023 Cutoff Percentile | 2022 Cutoff Percentile | Approx Marks (Mod. Shift) | Estimated 2026 Cutoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| General / Unreserved | 93.2362 | 90.7788 | 88.4121 | ~125–135 marks | 93.20 – 93.60 |
| GEN - EWS | 81.3266 | 75.6229 | 63.1114 | ~95–105 marks | 81.00 – 82.50 |

Cutoff Surge Alert: The General category qualifying cutoff rose from 88.41 (2022) to 93.23 (2024) — a 4.82 point jump in just two years. Target at least 94+ percentile (~130–140 marks in a moderate shift) to comfortably qualify for JEE Advanced 2026.
Subject-wise NTA Percentile — Why It Matters & Reference Data
NTA computes four percentile scores: three subject-wise (Physics, Chemistry, Maths) and one overall. Subject percentiles are used in tie-breaking and understanding them helps identify improvement areas.
Physics Percentile
- 100 marks → ~99.10 percentile
- 80 marks → ~97.20 percentile
- 60 marks → ~93.00 percentile
- 50 marks → ~88.50 percentile
- 40 marks → ~80.00 percentile
- 30 marks → ~68.00 percentile
- * Used as 2nd tie-breaker after Maths
Chemistry Percentile
- 100 marks → ~99.30 percentile
- 80 marks → ~97.50 percentile
- 60 marks → ~93.50 percentile
- 50 marks → ~89.00 percentile
- 40 marks → ~81.50 percentile
- 30 marks → ~69.00 percentile
- * Generally highest distributions
Maths Percentile
- 100 marks → ~98.90 percentile
- 80 marks → ~96.80 percentile
- 60 marks → ~92.50 percentile
- 50 marks → ~87.00 percentile
- 40 marks → ~78.50 percentile
- 30 marks → ~65.00 percentile
- * Primary tie-breaker subject
Tie-Breaker Priority (Official NTA Order): (1) Higher Maths percentile → (2) Higher Physics percentile → (3) Higher Chemistry percentile → (4) Lower ratio of incorrect-to-correct attempts → (5) Older candidate age. Focus on Maths to maximize your tie-breaking advantage.
Safe Percentile Ranges for Top NITs, IIITs & JEE Advanced
Reference percentile targets for specific colleges and exam eligibility. Based on General / OPEN category candidates in Other State (OS) quota from JoSAA Rounds 1–6 data (2022–2024).
| Target College / Exam | Branch | Minimum Safe Percentile (Gen / OS) | Approx Marks (Moderate Shift) |
|---|---|---|---|
| JEE Advanced 2026 | All IIT Branches | 93.50+ (Gen) | ~130–140 marks |
| NIT Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal | CSE / IT | 99.40+ | ~230–260 marks |
| Top 5 NITs | ECE / EE | 99.00+ | ~210–235 marks |
| IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Hyderabad | CSE / IT / ECE | 98.50+ | ~195–220 marks |
| Mid NITs (Calicut, Jaipur, Durgapur) | CSE / ECE | 97.50+ | ~175–200 marks |
| Tier-2 NITs + Newer IIITs | CSE / IT | 96.00+ | ~158–180 marks |
| Any NIT — Core Branches | Mech / Civil / Chemical | 93.50+ | ~128–145 marks |
| GFTIs / Home State NIT Quota | Any Branch | 85.00+ | ~100–120 marks |
| Category Seats (OBC-NCL) | Core Branches at NITs | 79.00+ | ~88–100 marks |
| Category Seats (SC) | Any Branch at NITs | 60.00+ | ~65–78 marks |
Home State Quota Advantage: 50% of seats in every NIT are reserved for Home State candidates. Home State closing percentile / ranks are significantly lower — often by 10,000 to 50,000+ ranks. Always check both OS and HS quotas for a complete picture.
