Home State vs Other State Quota Rules
One of the biggest advantages in NIT admissions is the 50% Home State reservation. Here is how JoSAA calculates eligibility:
Class 12th Location
Your eligibility for Home State quota is 100% defined by the state from where you completed or appeared for Class 12 / Intermediate board exams.
No Permanent Address Clash
If you live in Bihar but completed schooling in Delhi, you are strictly eligible for NIT Delhi under Home State quota, and considered Other State for NIT Patna.
Dual Pool Processing
JoSAA automatically evaluates home state candidates in both the All India / Other State pool and the Home State pool, awarding the best possible choice.
Understanding CSAB Special Rounds
After Round 5 of JoSAA completes, remaining vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs are transferred to the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) for two special rounds. Cutoffs often drop drastically during CSAB (sometimes by 10,000 to 40,000 ranks in core & circuital branches). If your rank is outside JoSAA closing boundaries, CSAB is your prime opportunity to secure an NIT or IIIT seat.
