JoSAA IIT Cutoff Benchmark Trends
IIT seat allocation through JoSAA is conducted across 5 to 6 rounds. Unlike NITs and IIITs, vacant IIT seats are not transferred to CSAB special rounds; hence JoSAA Round 5 represents the final, binding closing cutoff for all IIT admissions.

Proven IIT Choice Filling Sequence Strategy
JoSAA seat allocation works on a top-down greedy search: once a choice is allocated to you, you can never be considered for choices lower on your list in later rounds. Use the standard 3-tier sequence:
Dream Choices (15-20%)
Top-tier IITs and programs with closing ranks 15-25% higher than your rank (e.g. IIT Bombay/Delhi CSE/EE). If cutoffs soften, you bag a dream seat.
Realistic Choices (50-60%)
Core & circuital branches in IITs where previous year closing ranks closely mirror your rank (+/- 5%). This forms the backbone of your allotment.
Safety Choices (20-25%)
Established branches in Gen-2 and newer IITs where closing ranks are comfortably 20%+ below your rank to guarantee no seat forfeiture.
Freeze, Float & Slide Explained for IIT Aspirants
Freeze
You accept the allocated IIT seat and opt out of any further upgrades. Ideal if you received your topmost choice (e.g. IIT Bombay CSE).
Float
You retain your current seat but remain eligible for higher preferences across ANY IIT in subsequent rounds. (Recommended for 90% of students).
Slide
You accept the allocated institute (e.g. IIT Delhi) and wish to upgrade ONLY to a higher preferred branch within the same institute.
