How JoSAA Seat Allotment Works (Allocation Engine)

JoSAA seat allocation executes through an automated, multi-pass Merit-cum-Preference matching algorithm. The computer system evaluates each candidate's rank sequentially, starting with rank #1 in the Common Rank List (CRL) down to the lowest qualifying rank, checking their locked choices in decreasing order.

1. Merit
CRL & Category Rank Comparison
2. Quota
AI / HS / OS / Female Supernumerary
3. Order
Preference 1 to Preference N

When the algorithm reaches a candidate, it checks choice #1. If a seat is available under any eligible category (OPEN, EWS, OBC, SC, ST, or Female Supernumerary), it assigns the seat immediately. If choice #1 is full, it moves to choice #2, choice #3, and so on. If a candidate holds a seat in Float or Slide mode, they are automatically upgraded if a higher preference becomes vacant due to someone else's withdrawal.

Deep Dive: Freeze vs Float vs Slide Scenarios

FREEZE Scenario

Example: You are allotted Choice #4 (IIT Bombay Mechanical) and this is your dream branch. Selecting Freeze locks this seat permanently.

  • ✔ You exit all remaining rounds.
  • ✔ No further upgrades will be processed.
  • ✔ Proceed directly to final college admission.

FLOAT Scenario

Example: You are allotted Choice #12 (NIT Rourkela ECE). You select Float to try for Choices #1–11 (e.g. NIT Trichy CSE, Surathkal CSE) in Round 2.

  • ✔ NIT Rourkela ECE remains 100% reserved.
  • ✔ If upgraded, previous seat is transferred.
  • ✔ If not upgraded, NIT Rourkela is retained.

SLIDE Scenario

Example: You are allotted Choice #8 (NIT Trichy Civil) and only want higher branches in NIT Trichy (e.g. Mechanical, ECE, CSE).

  • ✔ College is locked to NIT Trichy.
  • ✔ Upgrades only within NIT Trichy choices.
  • ✔ Will not move to other colleges.

Can I change from Float to Freeze? Yes! If you are holding a seat on Float in Round 2 and decide that you do not want any further upgrades in Round 3, you can switch your willingness to Freeze before the round deadline.

Online Reporting & Responding to Queries

Once you upload documents and pay the SAF, an assigned verifying officer checks your records. The online reporting workflow follows three distinct verification outcomes:

Verification Approved

Your documents match all eligibility requirements. A Document Verification-cum-Seat Acceptance Letter is generated in your portal.

Discrepancy / Query Raised

If a certificate is blurry or invalid (e.g. old OBC certificate), the officer raises a query. You must upload the corrected document before the round query deadline.

Category Reversion

If category proof is invalid and cannot be rectified, your category is converted to GEN (Open). You will be considered under Open category in subsequent rounds.

What To Do If No Seat is Allotted in JoSAA Rounds

If you see "No Seat Allotted" on your screen, do not panic. This is very common in early rounds as top-rankers hold multiple tentative choices before round settlements:

  • Automatic Consideration: You do NOT need to re-register, fill new choices, or pay any fee. You automatically participate in Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, and Round 5.
  • Cutoff Movement: Cutoffs expand significantly between Round 1 and Round 5 as candidates withdraw from IIT seats or join state counselling systems (e.g. JAC Delhi, MHT CET, WBJEE).
  • CSAB Special Rounds: After JoSAA Round 5 concludes, CSAB conducts 2 Special Spot Rounds for thousands of vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs where closing ranks stretch by 20,000–80,000 ranks!

CSAB Safety Net: Even if you receive zero seats in all 5 rounds of JoSAA, you can directly register for CSAB Special Rounds with your JEE Main rank.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Your seat is provisionally confirmed once you pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF), upload all required certificates, and the verifying officer marks your document verification as 'Successful' generating your Seat Acceptance Intimation Slip.
No! You pay the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) ONLY ONCE in the round where you are first allocated a seat. If your seat is upgraded in subsequent rounds under Float or Slide, the payment automatically transfers to your new upgraded seat.
No. In JoSAA, seat allocation only moves UPWARDS towards higher preferred choices. Once upgraded, your lower-preferred previous seat is immediately allocated to another candidate and cannot be reclaimed under any circumstance.
Partial Admission Fee (PAF) is a mandatory confirmation fee (approx. ₹40,000 for GEN/OBC, ₹20,000 for SC/ST) payable after JoSAA Round 5 by candidates who secured a seat in the NIT+ system (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) to confirm their admission before campus reporting.
In JoSAA, the last opportunity to withdraw from an IIT seat and claim a refund of SAF is before the commencement of Round 5 (i.e. during the Round 4 reporting and withdrawal window). No withdrawals from IIT seats are permitted in or after Round 5.
If you fail to pay SAF, upload documents, or respond to an officer query within the round deadline, your allotted seat is cancelled immediately and you will be completely debarred from all subsequent rounds of JoSAA counselling.
