Overview: JEE Main 2027 Reservation Policy
The Government of India enforces a structured reservation policy for admissions into Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) like NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. This policy designates specific percentages of seats for socially and economically backward sections, including Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL), Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and General-Economically Weaker Sections (Gen-EWS). In addition to these vertical categories, a horizontal reservation of 5% is carved out for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) within each group. Domicile-based reservations, known as the Home State Quota, also apply to NITs, reserving 50% of their total intake for regional candidates during JoSAA Counselling.
Key Concept: Vertical reservations allocate a fixed percentage of seats, while horizontal reservations (like PwD) are applied within each vertical pool. If a candidate qualifies on pure open merit, they are allotted an Open seat, preserving the reserved seat for other candidates.
Category-Wise Seat Reservation Percentages

General-EWS Reservation Criteria
Introduced in 2019, the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) reservation reserves 10% of seats for General category candidates who do not belong to SC, ST, or OBC-NCL, and whose family income falls below the prescribed thresholds.
Income and Asset Requirements:
- Annual Family Income: Must be less than ₹8 Lakh from all sources (gross annual income) during the preceding financial year.
- Agricultural Land: Family must not own 5 acres or more of agricultural land.
- Residential Flat: Must not own a residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. or more.
- Residential Plot (Urban): Must not own a plot of 100 sq. yards or more in notified municipalities.
- Residential Plot (Rural): Must not own a plot of 200 sq. yards or more in non-notified municipalities.
EWS Certificate Validity: The EWS certificate must be issued by a Tehsildar or above in the prescribed Government of India format after April 1, 2027. State-format income certificates are not accepted as proof.
OBC-NCL Reservation Guidelines
Candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer) are eligible for a 27% seat reservation at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs during the admission process. Make sure to specify this during your JEE Main Application Form registration.
Central List Rule: To claim OBC-NCL reservation, the candidate's caste must be included in the Central List of OBCs published by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (available at socialjustice.gov.in). Castes listed in state OBC lists but absent from the Central List are considered General category in JEE Main.

SC / ST Category Quotas & Relaxations
Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates receive 15% reservation, and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates receive 7.5% reservation across all CFTIs.
Relaxations Offered:
- Class 12 Board Percentage: The qualifying threshold for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission is relaxed to 65% aggregate (compared to 75% for General/OBC-NCL/EWS) as detailed in the JEE Main Eligibility Criteria.
- Percentile Cutoff: A significantly lower qualifying rank is applied for qualifying to JEE Advanced (refer to the JEE Main Cutoff page for details).
- Application Fee: SC/ST/PwD candidates pay reduced registration fees.
- No Expiry Date: SC/ST certificates do not require yearly renewal, but they must be in the prescribed Central Government format and state the specific tribe/caste matching the presidential order.
PwD Horizontal Reservation
Candidates with physical disabilities are eligible for a 5% horizontal reservation within each category. This means seats are allocated as General-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC-PwD, ST-PwD, and EWS-PwD pools. Look at the JoSAA Seat Matrix for individual college seat numbers.
- Disability Benchmark: Minimum of 40% benchmark disability is mandatory, certified by an authorized Government Medical Board. Private doctor certificates are invalid.
- Exam Scribe Facility: PwD candidates can opt for a scribe during the JEE Main CBT and receive 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour.
- Physical Verification: During JoSAA Counselling, PwD candidates must report to a designated reporting center for physical verification by a medical board to confirm their disability status.
NIT Home State (HS) vs Other State (OS) Quotas

Home State Quota (50%)
Reserved for candidates who completed and passed their Class 12 board examination from a school located in the same state as the NIT. Domicile state or birth state does not impact this eligibility.
Other State Quota (50%)
Allocated to candidates applying from any other state or union territory in India. Usually requires significantly higher cutoff percentiles (AIR rank) compared to HS seats.
State of Eligibility Clarification: Your "State of Eligibility" is solely determined by the location of the school where you wrote the Class 12 exam. For example, if you live in Bihar but completed Class 12 in Jharkhand, your Home State NIT is NIT Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), not NIT Patna (Bihar).
