Overview: JEE Advanced 2027 Reservation Policy

Admissions to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are administered through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) based strictly on JEE Advanced ranks. The reservation policy implemented by the Central Government outlines seat allocations to ensure equal access to premier higher education. Refer to the official JEE Advanced Guide for exam structures.

The reservation framework comprises vertical reservation categories (GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST) and a horizontal reservation of 5% for Persons with Disabilities (PwD). Unlike other colleges, IITs do not reserve seats based on state of origin. You can read how this differs from NITs on our JEE Main Reservation page.

Key Concept: Candidates who belong to reserved categories are also eligible to secure Open (General) merit seats. When this happens, their category seat remains open for another reserved candidate, improving category seat availability.

IIT Quota Seat Allocations Table

The following table summarizes category-wise percentages reserved across all IITs:

Category Reservation Type IIT Seat Share Percentage
General (Open Merit) Unreserved ~40.5%
Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL) Vertical 27%
Scheduled Caste (SC) Vertical 15%
General – Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS) Vertical 10%
Scheduled Tribe (ST) Vertical 7.5%
Persons with Disabilities (PwD) Horizontal 5% (within each category)

Why is There No Home State Quota at IITs?

A significant point of distinction between IITs and NITs is the Home State Quota. NITs reserve 50% of their total seats for candidates who completed Class 12 within the state where that NIT is located.

IIT Domicile Policy: IITs do not enforce any home state or other state quotas. Admissions are strictly based on the candidate's All-India Rank (AIR) in the JEE Advanced exam and their selected category, making the competition uniform across all states.

Female Supernumerary Seats Quota

In order to improve the gender ratio in engineering programs, the Government of India introduced the Female Supernumerary Quota across all IITs and NITs.

  • Quota Percentage: Targets a minimum of 20% female enrollment in each branch across all IITs.
  • Supernumerary Nature: These seats are created "over and above" the standard seat matrix, meaning no existing male seats are reduced to accommodate this quota.
  • Allotment Basis: Allocated to female candidates on the basis of their JEE Advanced category ranks.

IIT Preparatory Courses for SC / ST / PwD

If seats in the SC, ST, or PwD categories remain vacant after JoSAA seat allotment rounds, IITs do not convert them into General seats. Instead, they offer admission to a 1-year Preparatory Course at the respective IITs.

  • Eligibility: Candidates who satisfy lower qualifying thresholds designated for preparatory lists.
  • Course Structure: One year of intensive training in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at the allotted IIT.
  • Progression: Upon passing the preparatory examinations at the end of the year, candidates transition directly into the regular 4-year B.Tech program against the vacant seat reserved for them.

Documents & Formats for JoSAA Verification

To secure your allotted category seat during JoSAA 2027 registration, you must upload PDF scans of certificates conforming to central guidelines:

  • OBC-NCL / EWS Certificates: Must be issued after April 1, 2027 in the official JoSAA format (state-specific OBC certificates are rejected). Guidelines on how to get these are listed in our JEE Advanced Application Form guide.
  • OBC Caste Registry: The caste must appear on the Central Registry list (socialjustice.gov.in).
  • EWS Criteria: Income must be less than ₹8 LPA, and family assets must stay within prescribed land and plot size limits.
  • SC / ST Certificates: Must list the caste exactly matching the central presidential order. Do not have a validity limit but must be clean.
  • PwD Certificate: Benchmark disability must be 40% or more, signed by an authorized medical board. Physical verification at IITs is mandatory during reporting rounds under JoSAA Counselling.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The category-wise reservation percentages at all IITs are: OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, GEN-EWS 10%, and PwD 5% horizontal reservation within each category.
No, the Home State and Other State quota policies are only applicable to NITs and certain GFTIs. IIT admissions are done strictly based on all-India category ranks in JEE Advanced, without any state-wise seat reservation.
To improve gender diversity, IITs create supernumerary seats specifically for female candidates (targeting at least 20% female enrollment in courses). These seats are created over and above the regular intake.
Preparatory courses are 1-year programs run at IITs for SC, ST, and PwD candidates who do not meet the relaxed qualifying cutoff ranks but satisfy lower preparatory cutoff requirements. Upon passing, they are admitted to the regular B.Tech programs.
