DASA Eligibility & Admission Insights

Predicted Eligible Programs (2024-Based DASA Closing Ranks)

What is DASA? DASA UG vs CIWG Scheme Explained

DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) is a scheme by the Ministry of Education (MoE) enabling NRIs, PIOs, OCIs, and Foreign Nationals to gain admission into NITs, IIITs, and SPAs based on JEE Main 2026 rank. It provides a dedicated supernumerary quota above normal intake, with tuition fee payable in USD.

DASA Scheme
For NRIs, PIOs, OCIs & Foreign Nationals
USD 4,000
Per semester (Non-SAARC) | USD 2,000/sem for SAARC countries
  • Must have completed 11th & 12th abroad
  • Valid passport required (Indian or foreign)
  • JEE Main 2026 minimum qualifying rank required
  • Registration fee: USD 300 (non-refundable)
CIWG Scheme
Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries
Indian Rate
Pay tuition at regular Indian student rates (INR)
  • Parent must be working in GCC country (UAE, Saudi, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait)
  • Student studied 11th & 12th abroad
  • Indian passport mandatory
  • JEE Main rank required (same as DASA)

CIWG Advantage: CIWG is a huge financial advantage over DASA. While DASA candidates pay USD 4,000 per semester (~₹3.2 Lakh), CIWG candidates pay the same tuition as Indian students (typically ₹50,000–₹1.5 Lakh per semester at NITs). CIWG candidates compete in the DASA merit list but pay at Indian rates if allotted a CIWG seat.

Source: Official 2024 DASA closing ranks from dasanit.org. DASA closing ranks are significantly more relaxed than JoSAA due to the limited DASA candidate pool (~5,000–8,000 candidates vs 14 Lakh in JoSAA). CIWG candidates receive similar allotments using this same rank-based merit list.

Frequently Asked Questions – DASA College Predictor

NRIs (Indian citizens residing abroad), PIOs (Person of Indian Origin), OCIs (Overseas Citizen of India), and Foreign Nationals who have completed Class 11th and 12th (or equivalent) from a recognized school outside India and hold a valid JEE Main 2026 rank (Paper 1 for B.Tech, Paper 2 for B.Arch) are eligible for DASA UG 2026. Candidates who studied 11th and 12th in India are NOT eligible regardless of nationality.
CIWG (Children of Indian Workers in Gulf) is a sub-scheme under DASA for children of Indian nationals working in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait. The key difference is the tuition fee: CIWG candidates pay at Indian student rates (INR), which is significantly cheaper than DASA candidates who pay USD 4,000 per semester for Non-SAARC. Both DASA and CIWG seats are supernumerary (above normal intake) in NITs, IIITs, and SPAs.
DASA closing ranks (expressed as CRL rank equivalents) are significantly more relaxed than JoSAA because: (1) The DASA candidate pool is very small — approximately 5,000–8,000 candidates vs 14 Lakh in JoSAA, (2) DASA seats are supernumerary — they are added on top of normal intake and do not compete with Indian residents, (3) Many DASA candidates choose only top institutes, leaving seats in mid-tier NITs and IIITs unfilled. This means even a candidate with CRL rank 50,000 may easily get a top NIT CSE under DASA.
Technically, NRIs/OCIs with Indian passports who have also studied in India (11th and 12th) can participate in JoSAA under the general category. However, if you have completed 11th and 12th abroad (a DASA eligibility requirement), you are typically not eligible for JoSAA as a regular Indian resident category candidate. You must choose between DASA/CIWG or JoSAA based on your specific eligibility. Consult the official DASA portal (dasanit.org) for your specific case.
Key documents for DASA 2026 registration: (1) Valid passport (Indian or foreign), (2) JEE Main 2026 admit card and score card, (3) Class 12 / equivalent marksheet showing 60%+ in PCM, (4) Proof of studying 11th and 12th abroad (school leaving certificate), (5) For CIWG: Parent's employment proof from Gulf country (work permit/visa + employment letter), (6) PIO/OCI card if applicable, (7) Equivalence certificate from Association of Indian Universities (AIU) for foreign boards if required.
