NTA Normalization Methodology & Percentile Calculation

Because JEE Main is conducted across multiple shifts with differing difficulty levels, NTA utilizes a robust percentile normalization method.

A percentile score is not a percentage of marks. It indicates the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or lower than that specific candidate in that shift. Percentile scores are calculated to 7 decimal places to prevent cluster ties.

Official NTA Percentile Formula
Percentile Score = (100 × Number of candidates appeared in the session with raw score ≤ T) ÷ (Total number of candidates who appeared in that session)
Where T is the raw score obtained by the candidate in that specific shift. The highest raw score in any session receives a 100.0000000 percentile.
Feature Percentage (%) NTA Percentile Score
Definition Absolute marks scored out of maximum total (Marks/300 × 100) Relative position of candidate among shift peers
Shift Fairness Heavily impacted if a particular shift paper is harder Standardized across all shifts regardless of paper toughness
Calculation Base Candidate's raw marks alone Candidate's rank relative to total test-takers in that shift
Precision Usually 2 decimal places Strictly 7 decimal places (e.g., 99.8451203)

JEE Main 2027 Marks vs Percentile Range

Based on historical score normalization trends across shifts, here is the projected relationship between raw marks (out of 300) and expected percentile brackets:

Raw Marks (Out of 300) Expected NTA Percentile Approx. Common Rank List (CRL) Target Admission Level
280 – 300 99.99+ 1 – 150 Top NIT CSE (Trichy / Surathkal / Warangal)
250 – 279 99.80 – 99.98 151 – 2,500 Top 5 NITs CSE/ECE & IIIT Allahabad

Official Tie-Breaking Resolution Criteria for JEE Main 2027

Mathematics NTA Score

Candidate with higher NTA score in Mathematics is given higher rank.

2

Physics NTA Score

Candidate with higher NTA score in Physics receives the priority ranking.

3

Chemistry NTA Score

Candidate with higher NTA score in Chemistry receives the higher rank.

4

Incorrect to Correct Ratio

Candidate with a lower proportion of negative/incorrect answers across all subjects is placed higher.

5

Subject-wise Incorrect Ratio

Lower incorrect answer ratio evaluated sequentially in: Mathematics → Physics → Chemistry.

6

Age / Application Sequence

Older candidate by age followed by ascending Application Number sequence if ties still persist.

Frequently Asked Questions on JEE Main Results

Direct answers to common queries regarding scorecards, percentile normalization, ranks, and cutoff criteria.

How is the final JEE Main rank calculated if I appear in both Session 1 and Session 2?

If a candidate participates in both January and April sessions, NTA automatically considers the best of the two Total NTA Percentile Scores for generating the final All India Rank (AIR) list and determining qualifying cutoffs for JEE Advanced.

What is the difference between JEE Main raw marks and NTA percentile score?

Raw marks are the absolute score (out of 300) calculated using NTA’s marking scheme (+4 for correct, -1 for wrong). Percentile score is a normalized measure from 100 to 0 that reflects your relative ranking among candidates who sat for your specific shift.

When will NTA announce the JEE Main All India Ranks (AIR)?

All India Ranks (both Common Rank List CRL and Category Ranks) along with the official JEE Advanced qualifying cutoff list are released simultaneously with the declaration of the Session 2 (April) results.

What documents are required to download the JEE Main 2027 scorecard?

You need your 12-digit Application Number, your Date of Birth (or Password), and the security captcha code shown on the NTA login screen.

What should I do if there is a mistake in my name or category on the scorecard?

Immediately email the NTA Helpdesk at jeemain-nta@gov.in or call 011-40759000 / 011-69227700 with your registration confirmation page and relevant supporting identification documents.

Will JoSAA counselling accept Session 1 or Session 2 scorecards?

JoSAA processes seat allotment strictly using your Final Combined All India Rank (AIR) provided on the Session 2 scorecard, which already incorporates your best percentile score across both sessions.
